Building bridges, creating illusions and Worms Aren't Gross (WAG)

This week Year 5 has been learning about capacity. The class was challenged to recreate a 'magic trick' where two glasses, which looked three quarters full did not overflow when one was poured into another. They discovered that the shape of the glass was very important and that they could create an illusion of the glass being full by using one that was wider at the top.

Year 5 has also been learning about design. The children were challenged to create a bridge which could hold the weight of a tissue box for at least 5 seconds. They were given dry spaghetti, mini marshmallows and 50cm of tape. The children tried some different designs and tested their bridges. They were able to assess the effectiveness of the bridges and adapt their design to resolve flaws.

And finally, in assembly with Miss Barker this week, Year 5 and 6 children enjoyed participating in a debate on worms. Joanna, Adelaide and Daniel (Y5) were pro-worms (their campaign group was called Worms Aren't Gross) and Lidia, Sofia and Mihajlo (Y6) rose to the challenge of countering the pro-worm arguments in an impromptu debate, run by Sarah (Y6). Both sides put forward really sensible arguments which really made their audiences think! After hearing the arguments both for and against worms, the other children in Years 5 and 6 held a blind vote to decide whether they viewed worms as useful or disgusting.
