Bikeability!

On Tuesday 6th of May, Year 6 started a week long Bikeability workshop. Bikeability is a course put on by the local council to help local children feel more confident cycling on roads

The class was split into two groups, and each group cycled for about an hour and a half each day.

We learned how to look over our ‘traffic shoulder’ safely, signalling to drivers, riding on the road and much more. Overall we had fun and we learned how to be safe on the road.

Taking part in the cycling course means that when we go to secondary school we are able to ride a bike and be safe on the road while cycling. We learned to check over our ‘traffic shoulder’ and to always signal and stay in the middle of the lane during turns rather than drifting into the lane of traffic. We learned when it is appropriate to do U-turns and also were reminded not to go too close to the car doors in case one suddenly opens.

Bikeability was a very fun course that improved a lot of people’s confidence and skill in riding a bike. Paola was the main instructor and Simone was the second instructor. They were very good and gave us very clear instructions. I always ride my bike to school by myself and this course was helpful for me to think about riding my bike in an even safer and better way.

It was great to spend more of the school week out and about in Southwark and to practise cycling safely on the road and in a way that maximises the safety of all those using the roads.
