Early Years Curriculum

The educational programme is planned with reference to the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance material that supports practitioners in implementing the requirements of the EYFS.

Prime areas of learning and development are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

Specific areas of learning and development are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Running through all of these areas of learning are the characteristics of learning; playing and exploring, active learning, creating and thinking critically.

Every day is filled with fun and lively activities spread across the breadth of our curriculum. Each term or half term, we have a theme or topic which navigates us through our learning. Examples are Traditional Tales, Under the Sea, Minibeasts, Seasons, People Who Help Us and Growing. We aim to follow the children’s interests and adapt topics accordingly.

In the early years, learning through play is central and children engage in purposeful, structured activities, inside and outside the classroom. These are carefully constructed to develop children's independence, social language skills as well as their physical confidence and agility.
Leaders provide an inclusive and supportive school culture through a curriculum which encourages pupils to respect and care for others and develop an understanding of their own identity. ISI Report 2025
