Pupil Wellbeing
Attendance, absence and holidays
Regular school attendance is an important part of giving your child the best possible start in life. Children who miss school frequently can fall behind in their work and do less well in exams. By law children of compulsory school age 5 to 16 must receive a suitable full-time education.
Attendance is monitored via the daily classroom register. If your child is absent due to illness please inform the school office by telephone or email before the school day begins. The school office will contact the parent if a child is marked absent without reason and will follow up for written confirmation. Any requests for absence need to be authorised by the head teacher and must be made in writing to the school office. The circumstances in which absence can be authorised are limited, for example, family events such as weddings and funerals. Persistent absence and/or lateness may be marked as a safeguarding concern and will be monitored.
Lateness or failure to collect children
Please phone the school immediately if you anticipate being late for collection to give an estimated time of arrival or inform of an alternative collection arrangement. Parents collecting children more than 15 minutes later than scheduled (or any time later than 5.30pm) may be charged for Every Day Club supervision.
If a pupil is not picked up by a parent/carer, the following action will be taken:
The school office will ring parents to find out their whereabouts and likely time of arrival.
The head teacher is notified of pupils still in the building after 5.30pm.
Uncollected pupils are brought into the office to be supervised.
Where parents cannot be contacted, the school will contact the pupil’s emergency contact(s).
In the case where parents/emergency contact(s) cannot be contacted, and according to the discretion of the head teacher, social services will be called. If social services are not contactable, the police will be called.
Medical information
As part of our duty of care, it is important that we hold up to date and accurate health information for our pupils. If your child has a medical condition, please inform the school as soon as possible, with details of severity and/or treatment (medication) and keep the school informed of any changes. You will be given a Medical Action Plan form as your child begins their schooling, please request any additional ones if needed. Any medication must be given to the school office.
For any ad hoc administration of medication (e.g. a course of antibiotics), parents must complete and sign an ad-hoc medicine information form to provide details and give authorisation to administer in school. A hard copy version of this form can be obtained from the school office, or you can submit a google form. If you do submit a google form, please would you email the office and notify them that you’ve done so. Please ensure that the medication is handed in to the school office upon arrival. The school will only administer medication prescribed or recommended by a doctor/nurse or pharmacist. Any other medicine should be administered outside school only.
Allergies
If your child has an allergy, you must inform and update the school regarding medication and severity. We ask you not to include any form of nuts or nut based products in your child’s packed lunch such as Nutella or pesto. Thank you for your co-operation.
Injury/illness
Should your child hurt themselves at school, they will be examined by the staff member on duty or sent to the office to be looked after. A note will be sent home detailing any action that was taken (e.g. ice pack or plaster applied). In the case of any injury (however mild) to the face or head, the office will phone the parent to inform them.
If a child becomes unwell during the school day, they will be sent to the sick bay. The pupil will be sent home as soon as is practically possible if considered too unwell to continue with the school day or to be potentially contagious to others.
If a pupil becomes seriously injured or unwell whilst at school, the head teacher will decide and arrange for them to be either taken home or to a hospital, either by a member of staff/parent/carer and/or by ambulance.
Contagious illnesses
The school recommends that if your child is unwell and could be contagious, they should be kept at home until their symptoms subside. In cases of chickenpox, please inform the school so other pupils can be monitored.
Pupils who have had diarrhoea and/or vomiting should not come into school until 48 hours after symptoms have cleared.
If your child catches head lice please ensure that you treat it as soon as possible and before they come back into school. Any child who is found in school with head lice will be sent home for treatment so as to reduce the spread to other pupils.
Water
Please send your child in with a bottle of water each day. Children are encouraged to bring their water bottles into the classroom and are frequently reminded to drink. Please do not send this bottle in your child’s book bag as they sometimes leak and damage books.
Weather
During periods of hot weather, it is advised that your child wears the uniform sun hat to school and that you apply sun cream before school. Sun cream may be reapplied during the school day, please let the classroom teacher know if you would not like your child to have this applied.
Personal items
Pupils are asked not to bring toys or electronic devices to school. Items for show and tell can be brought to school on the day and will be kept in the classroom, but not used at playtime/every day club. Year 6 pupils may bring mobiles to school but they must be turned off and handed in to the school office to be kept during the day.
